Our personal self image is our daily guide post. It is our identity. And it is fragile.
You may have been told that there is always people who are better than you and there always will be. People hear that from parents, teachers, and even friends.
But, what you probably don’t hear as often, is that you are better than a lot of people.
Everyone has their strengths. And even though your strengths may not be as developed as some, they will be well above many others.
There is no excuse for not being better tomorrow than you are today. No excuse, that is, so long as you want to. If you have no desire to improve your personal self image, then there is no one who can help you.
It all starts with you. It all ends with you. And, in-between, your personal self image is all about what you do with the talents you have.
Here are 7 ways to enhance your personal self image.
7 Ways To Enhance Your Personal Self Image
1. List Out Your Strengths
People take what they are good at for granted. It is just something you do; it’s almost as natural as breathing. You have been doing it for a long time. You don’t even think about it. But, if you force yourself to list your strengths, you will discover unknown qualities that you have.
2. Others Sometimes Know You Better Than Yourself
Among the people you know, who would give you the most honest feedback? Perhaps a friend? Maybe a co-worker? Go to that person and simply ask for some honest feedback. Don’t interrupt. Listen. Take notes. And be sure to thank her or him for being straightforward. Then, when you are alone, review what you have learned. Then put an action plan together focused on a better you.
3. Try Something You Haven’t Done in a Long Time
Think back to when you were in high school or college. What kinds of extracurricular activities were you involved with? What excited you? What kind of person were you then? Our personal self image is influenced by our successes and failures, our happy times and sad times. Focus on the positive. Get back to those activities that you enjoy most. And if you decide to take a completely new path, taht too will enhance your personal self image. Focus on small wins. They will keep you motivated, positive, energized.
4. Teach Others
As you work on your personal self image, share your progress with others. Teaching others the steps they can take will force you to dig deeper into the outcome you want. Teaching, in this regard, is a lot like sharing. Share where you have come form. Share what you have done to get to where you are. Share your successes and hiccups. We learn best from others who have journey before us. This is your time. A real personal self image opportunity to be bold!
Volunteering has the advantage of helping others as well as helping you. Through volunteering you meet new people. The task or role you fill is less stressful. And, it goes without saying, people generally volunteer for activities or organizations they enjoy or want to be associated with. Volunteering allows you to help without the stress of failure. Volunteering builds confidence and strengthens one’s personal self image.
6. Lead a Group
When you find a group whose members share the same interest as you, put yourself in a leadership position. You will face new challenges that strengthen your skills. Like volunteering, you can also put leading a group on your resume. And, with the new people you will meet, this gives you an opportunity to stretch. Good relationships are powerful in developing our personal self image.
7. Online Training
If there are skills you want to develop, consider online training. Web-based workshops, seminars, webinars, and courses are excellent learning resources. Often you can schedule them for times convenient to you. From one-to-one coaching to completing a degree, the internet has opened the world to you.
Personal Self Image Summary
I started off with stating that there will always be people better than you. That is a fact. There will always be someone better than you, me, and even that person.
What that has to do with personal self image is simply this. Life is not a competition. Anyone who believes it is will be disappointed.
Life is about living. Living is about you being the best that you choose to be. Living is about doing what you love, what you are passionate about.
Now do not read into the above any confusion with responsibility. Each of us must be a responsible citizen. And there is much to that.
Taking responsibility for ourselves, being responsible, is the very foundation of a positive self image. It is the essence of living a bold life.
You can do it.
